Guidelines on Passport Photos

Passport Photo Requirements

The photo is perhaps the passport’s most important component. As with any other I.D., the photo is proof of one’s identity. However, one just cannot use any photo. In a passport, one has to follow certain guidelines. The right photo will unify the registration process. Utilizing a photograph that does not comply with the requirements is a cause for delay when applying for a new passport or renewing a passport.

In San Diego, California, there are a number of locations where one can have his or her passport picture taken. Some of the locations where one can acquire passport photos in San Diego include any local photo studio, any of the passport offices like A Official Passport in Point Loma, and at any CVS or KINKOS location.

The standard size of the passport photos  is 2 inches x 2 inches and the photo – to ensure it is current – must be taken within the last six months. The photo must be in color and show one’s full face. Background colors must be off-white or plain white. One should have his picture taken in decent street attire.

For adults having their passport photos taken, the person must look directly into the camera and must have a neutral expression. This means no smiling. The color of the photo must depict accurately the hair and skin tone. If one wears colored contact lenses or eyeglasses, they should not be used in the photo. Passport photos having a lot of shadows are not accepted. The background must also not have any shadowing. Likewise, too much lighting is not acceptable as it can cause one’s skin to shine.

As for clothing, normal wear is accepted and one should not wear hats or any other hair adornments like clips or headbands. An exception, however, is when the passport is needed for religious purposes. This means one can wear a headscarf, a topi or taqiyah, or a burqa as long as the applicant can present to the passport office a letter that states the item is worn for religious purposes.
